Directed Study: Pedagogy -- co-taught with Dr. Ann George
​Face-to-face format


Prerequisites: ENGL 10803, ENGL 20803, and at least one 10000- or 20000-level ENGL/WRIT course. Introduces students to the practice of editing manuscripts intended for publication. Topics include the editorial process (both academic and commercial), the ethics of editing, and the role of the editor in publishing. Students will engage in extensive editing practice of journal and book manuscripts.

Directed Study: Pedagogy
Responsibilities for WRIT 40383:
  • Attending and co-facilitating all classes
  • Meeting with Dr. Ann George 1-2 times per week for class planning
  • Meeting with TCU Press and the manuscript's author to discuss the editing work
  • Assisting students with questions during in-class workshop
  • Discussing assessment methods/methodologies with Dr. George
  • Assisting Dr. George with feedback on and grading of student assignments using track changes and rubrics
  • Training class on Word Track Changes and GoogleDocs
  • Overseeing the style sheet for the manuscript, making corrections and additions as needed
  • Holding office hours to assist students
  • Co-leading student conferences with Dr. George
  • Cleaning up student work in preparation to send manuscript to TCU Press
  • Teaching the final unit of the course on writing for the web and information pages
  • Keeping teaching journal
Directed Study: Pedagogy Emphasis
​For a Pedagogy Directed Study, a student takes ENGL 50970 to work closely with a supervising professor in the teaching of an undergraduate class. The student will not only study the topic of the class, but also serve as an apprentice teacher, assisting the professor in a variety of tasks—including course-related research, planning, and assessment. - from TCU English Graduate Student Policies
